Carmel is a suburban city in Hamilton County, located immediately north of Indianapolis. In 2017 the population of Carmel was 92,198 according to the US Census Bureau, making it the fifth-largest city in Indiana.
In 2012, Carmel was selected as the ‘’Best place to live in the United States’’. It has been the fastest-growing community in 2012.
Carmel was originally called Bethlehem. John Felps, Seth Green, Alexander Mills, and Daniel Warren laid out the town in April of 1837. Bethlehem became Carmel upon becoming incorporated because there already existed a Bethlehem.
The city received one of the first automated traffic signals in 1924.
