Ford is changing its focus, according to a recent report from Bloomberg. While low-cost electric cars from China are becoming more common in Europe, Ford is delaying its larger electric vehicles. Instead, the company plans to concentrate on creating smaller, more affordable electric models. These changes are expected to impact the U.S. market as well.

The first of these new electric models from Ford will be a compact SUV, set to debut in late 2026. This SUV will have a starting price of around $25,000, making it competitive with the entry-level Tesla. Ford’s decision to prioritize smaller electric vehicles comes as a response to the growing demand for affordable electric options.

This compact SUV will be built on a brand-new electric platform. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Ford has a team of fewer than 100 people working on this project in Irvine, California. Alongside the SUV, Ford plans to develop a small electric pickup truck, possibly as an electric version of the popular Maverick. Additionally, the new platform could be used to create a specialized vehicle for ride-hailing services, similar to what General Motors and Kia are exploring.

To keep costs down, the compact electric SUV is expected to utilize a lithium-iron-phosphate battery.

This type of battery is typically 30% cheaper than the standard lithium-ion batteries used in most electric vehicles today. However, Ford is also considering other battery technologies to further reduce costs. Alan Clarke, who previously worked on engineering the Tesla Model Y, is leading the affordable electric vehicle project at Ford.

Previously, Ford had been developing a three-row electric SUV, potentially bringing the iconic Explorer name into the electric era. However, those plans have now been put on hold. Instead, Ford is introducing a small electric crossover in Europe this year, using the Explorer name and based on the Volkswagen MEB platform. However, this model will remain exclusive to the European market for now.

In summary, Ford is shifting its focus towards smaller and more affordable electric vehicles. With plans to release a compact SUV and possibly a small electric pickup truck, Ford aims to meet the increasing demand for affordable electric cars. These changes reflect the company’s commitment to providing electric options that are accessible to a wider range of consumers.

Ford’s upcoming electric car is something to be excited about. It’s going to be small, affordable, and environmentally friendly. With its release set for 2026, we’ll have to wait a little while longer, but it’ll be worth it. So, if you’re in the market for a new car in the future, consider going electric with Ford’s compact and affordable option. Together, we can drive towards a cleaner and brighter tomorrow!
