The logistics industry is big and booming. You may already know that there are many different areas of logistics. Whether you’re an owner-operator or a trucker, you may still be unaware of other areas of the industry. Also, it helps to know about all the aspects of the supply chain. This includes warehouses. Specifically, forklift operators are important in the chain as well.

Becoming a forklift operator

First, is this job right for you? Well, if you are good at handling heavy machinery, working with others, and not sitting at a desk, you might like this job.

So, what does a forklift operator do? Notably, they move heavy items that cannot be lifted manually. Warehouses, factories, ports, and other places often need forklifts and forklift operators. Therefore, forklift operators need to pay close attention to detail.

Also, a typicla shift runs about 8 to 10 hours long. This may be a welcome improvement for those who are used to driving long hours and days on the road. Still, it’ll be helpful to have a basic knowledge of mathematics and warehouse technology.

You will also want to know about the different types of forklifts out there, and which ones you may need training for. Forklift types include the Clamp Truck, Roll Clamp, Double-Fork, Single-Fork, Turret Truck and Stand-up Forks.

Having certification can definitely be helpful when looking for a forklift operator job. You can get certified online or in classes. However, many companies are willing to offer on-the-job training. This is partly because their company may have specific certification requirements that cannot be trained for in an outside class.

At the very least, you’ll need to be 18 years of age or older. Also, it helps to have a high school diploma or GED. Finally, you’ll probably need to pass a background check and drug screen test as well.
